Top Tips for Teething
When it comes to teething, there are many teethers out there! It is hard to know which ones will be best. Remember all babies are different, and will go for different types, so it’s best to try and have a few different choices.
What is teething?
Teething is where your baby’s teeth start to emerge through their gums. Their first milk teeth are already under the gums when your baby is born, and they usually start to cut through the gums between six and nine months. My son’s teeth actually did not appear until he was two years old! But this is quite rare. Your baby’s complete set of teeth is usually through by the time they are three years old. What are the signs of teething? Some babies’ teeth can come through with hardly any pain, but sometimes they can experience a dull pain that gets more intense in the few days before a tooth cuts through the gum. As your baby cannot tell you they are in pain, there are a few signs you can look out to suggest there may be a tooth on its way:
As little ones like to bite down to soothe their gums, teethers are a good way of relieving pain. Here are some of our favourites:
1. Our favourite- Matchstick Monkey
Mini Monkey/Animal Teether/Dancing Monkey/Flat Face and Original Monkey. All of the Teethers are dishwasher and cold water steriliser safe, unlike some of the below as they are made with natural rubber. You can also put them in the freezer so it is nice and cold on the gums.
2. Sophie the Giraffe
A popular choice and has been going since 1961! Doubles up a toy and teether. You can only wipe down Sophie, so might be a solution for an older baby.
3. Oli and Carol Teethers
Mini Teethers-Hawaii the Flower/Anita the Bananita/Eli the Clover/Ramonita the Radish.
4. Liewood Teethers
They have a lovely selection of different types of teethers.
5. Zoli Teethers
Chubby Gummy Gum Massaging Teethers. These are good as they introduce your baby to a toothbrush shape.
6. B.Box Fresh Food Feeder
These are mesh feeders where you can put frozen/cold fruit in where your baby can suck. They are good for weaning also, introducing different tastes.
A few more tips
When my children and charges were babies, I used to have a few different teethers on offer, so that if they got bored of one, you had another up your sleeve!
Cold cotton cloths are also a good idea to soothe gums, as well as some teething powders and gels.
While all this things help, they do not take the symptoms away unfortunately, until the tooth/teeth have cut through.
